Caroline de Peyrecave:
‘As a portrait artist I am interested in how the life experiences of my sitters inform their personality and the way in which they present themselves to the world. Through WARpaint I have had a unique opportunity to meet ex-servicemen and women have had dramatic experiences at a young age as a direct consequence of conflict.
At a time when we can reflect on the end of our involvement in operations in Afghanistan, in addition to the centenary of the First World War, I wanted to focus on what it means for injured ex servicemen and women to live with life changing injuries, how they have adapted, and how to best represent and capture what they have achieved through this exhibition.
I work mainly from life by a technique called sight-size. The broad handling comes into fo cus when seen at the viewing distance. While my work belongs to this tradition I try and make it more interesting by pushing its boundaries and giving it a contemporary edge.”
